8 Things to Add to Your Mop Water for a Better Clean

Most people just fill the bucket with hot water and a squirt of floor cleaner. And that's fine — but there are a few things you can add to your mop water that make a real difference to the results.
1. White vinegar
A cup of white vinegar in your mop water cuts through grease, kills bacteria, and leaves floors streak-free. It's especially good on tiles and lino. The smell disappears once it dries.
2. Bicarbonate of soda
Add a tablespoon to help lift stains and neutralise odours — especially useful in kitchens and utility rooms where smells can build up.
3. Essential oils
Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial properties. Lavender smells lovely. Eucalyptus is great if anyone in the house has been unwell. A few drops in the water and your floors smell clean long after you're done.
4. Lemon juice
Fresh lemon juice or a splash of lemon concentrate brightens light-coloured floors and adds a fresh scent. Good for tiles and stone floors.
5. Rubbing alcohol
A splash of rubbing alcohol helps floors dry faster and adds extra disinfecting power. Useful in bathrooms.
6. Washing up liquid (sparingly)
A tiny squeeze helps lift greasy residue from kitchen floors without leaving a film. Too much and you'll end up with sticky floors.
7. A few drops of dish soap
Just a small amount goes a long way. It helps cut through grease and grime without leaving a soapy residue if you use it sparingly.
8. Hot water (as hot as you can get it)
Obvious but often overlooked. Hot water cleans far more effectively than cold or lukewarm. Start with the hottest water you can and work quickly before it cools down. Don't use bleach on hardwood or laminate — it strips the finish. And don't over-saturate floors; too much liquid can warp surfaces.
