Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips for Your Home

More and more of my clients are asking about eco-friendly cleaning — and I think it's a great direction to go in. The good news is that cleaning your home without harsh chemicals is not only possible, it often works just as well.

White vinegar — the most underrated cleaner

White vinegar is acidic, which makes it brilliant for cutting through limescale, grease, and water marks. I use it on taps, shower screens, tiles, and glass. Mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle and it works as an all-purpose cleaner for most surfaces. Don't use it on natural stone like marble or granite — the acid can damage the surface.

Bicarbonate of soda — gentle but powerful

Bicarb is mildly abrasive, which makes it great for scrubbing without scratching. It also neutralises odours rather than just covering them up. I use it in the sink, on the oven mixed into a paste, and in bins. Combined with vinegar, it creates a fizzing reaction that helps lift dirt from grout and around taps.

Lemon juice — natural antibacterial

Fresh lemon juice is antibacterial and cuts through grease. It's particularly good in the kitchen — on chopping boards, in the microwave, and on stainless steel surfaces. It also leaves a genuinely fresh scent without artificial fragrance.

Microfibre cloths — reduce the need for chemicals

Good microfibre cloths can clean most surfaces with nothing but water. They trap dust and bacteria mechanically rather than relying on chemical products. Wash them at 60°C to keep them hygienic. If you'd prefer to have a professional take care of it using eco-friendly products, I'm happy to use them in your home — just let me know when you book.
