Most people clean everything in their home but completely forget about the washing machine. And then they wonder why their clothes come out smelling a bit off. Here's how to clean your washing machine properly.

Clean the door seal first

The rubber seal around the door is where mould and mildew love to grow. Pull it back gently and you'll probably find black spots and lint. Wipe it down with a cloth and a solution of white vinegar and water. For stubborn mould, apply a paste of bicarbonate of soda and leave it for a few minutes before wiping off.

Clean the detergent drawer

Pull it out completely and soak it in hot water. Scrub with an old toothbrush to remove detergent and fabric softener residue. Rinse clean and dry before putting it back.

Clean the filter

The filter is usually behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. Put a towel down before you open it — water will come out. Unscrew the filter, rinse it under the tap, and remove any fluff, coins, or debris. This is one of the main reasons machines start to smell.

Run a hot empty cycle

Put the machine on its hottest, longest cycle with nothing in it. Add a washing machine cleaning tablet, a cup of white vinegar, or a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda directly in the drum. This flushes out bacteria, limescale, and odours.

How often should you do this?

Once a month is ideal. At the very least, clean the filter every two to three months and run a hot empty cycle monthly. Your clothes will smell better. Your machine will last longer.
